This chapter argues for the importance of a postcolonial perspective in criminology. It is a perspective that has the potential to offer new theoretical insights, and to expand the discipline in an engaged and reflexive endeavour that is cognisant of cultural and historical differences.
The psychological perspective looks at something that not many other perspectives do, it looks at both the offender and victim as individuals. For several decades, mainstream criminology has been dominated by sociological and political perspectives. Although findings from these fields must not be discarded or underplayed, considered alone, they do not offer a complete assessment of the contributions to criminal behavior. positivist criminology as an instrument of imperialism for failing to foreground important issues for criminological research, including as human rights abuses, and state violence (Agozino, 2003, 2004; Shearing & Marks, 2011).
